Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the best things we can do for our body.  It affects how we think and act in the waking hours.  Throughout our sleep there are a few different stages which we go through and being able to wake up feeling well and rested often has a lot to do with getting through all of the necessary sleep stages.

The Different Stages of Sleep

There are a few stages of sleep which comprise our sleep cycle.  The first is the non-rapid eye movement (NREM) stage which has four mini-stages within it that consists of transition from waking to sleeping, intermediate sleep, beginning of deep sleep and the deepest sleep.  This is when the body starts the initial relaxation phase and everything starts to slow down.  The next stage of sleep in the sleep cycle is the rapid eye movement (REM) stage.  During the REM stage of sleep an individual will be in a dreaming state of sleep and experience effects such as increased brain activity, increased flow of blood to the brain and increased respiration.  The entire combination of both NREM and REM sleep occurs every 90 minutes and occurs many times a night, depending on how long you sleep each night.

How the Stages Affect Our Sleep Cycle

Understanding the different stages of sleep is very important as individuals need to achieve both NREM and REM sleep in order to get a good sleep every night and wake up feeling rested.  If one mainly experiences NREM sleep and not enough time in deep REM sleep portion, the results are a tired and possibly irritable person in the morning.

How You Can Achieve Proper Sleep

One of the best ways to achieve proper sleep is to be comfortable and this can be acquired simply by sleeping on a good mattress every night, such as a memory foam mattress.  A foam memory mattress will cradle and support your body while you sleep and provide comfort overall.  Obtaining a memory mattress to enhance your sleeping is one of the best things that you can do in order to get a good night’s sleep, both of the NREM and REM variety.  A memory foam mattress is affordable, comfortable and the perfect promoter of good sleep.

The two types of covers that come with the Natural Form’s foam memory mattress are the wool cover and the innofa cover.  The following will highlight what each cover is and the pros and cons to choosing each one.

The Wool Memory Foam Mattress Cover

The wool memory mattress cover is made of Virgin Australian Wool and provides you with a an extremely comfortable sleeping arrangement.  When you use a wool cover over your foam mattress you will be choosing a mattress which feels perfect all months out of the year.  It will keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  A wool cover for a memory foam mattress is a good option for those who can never seem to get comfortable in bed as the wool will provide a cozy atmosphere for the sleeper.  In addition, those who sleep with a wool cover are less likely to come in contact with bacteria and dust mites. Keep in mind that some individuals are allergic to wool and for those individuals the other cover alternative, the innofa cover, would be best.

The Innofa Foam Memory Mattress Cover

The other type of foam mattress cover is the innofa cover.  Like the wool mattress cover, the innofa cover can be washed and is extremely comfortable to sleep on over your memory foam mattress.  The innofa foam cover may be less able to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer when compared with the wool foam mattress cover.

In the end, both the wool cover and the innofa cover have wonderful qualities which make either one a great choice for adding extra comfort to your memory mattress.

Managing Your Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder that can do much worse than keep you from getting a good night’s rest.  Even in its milder forms, sleep apnea disrupts your body’s natural consumption of oxygen.  And, if left unchecked, the disorder can lead to heart failure and sometimes even death.

In its initial stages, sleep apnea seems innocuous.  Early symptoms such as loud snoring are often dismissed as harmless or merely inconvenient. But even at this stage, your body is missing the rest and oxygen you need to feel healthy and enjoy your waking hours.

And since, by definition, sleep apnea manifests itself during sleep, sufferers are unable to evaluate their symptoms — they are literally unconscious of the disease as it progresses and worsens.  They may not even realize they are suffering from this dangerous disorder until it is too late.

Sleep apnea can be disruptive, inconvenient and dangerous.  But with proper management, it doesn’t have to keep you from getting a good night’s sleep.

The most important step is identifying sleep apnea.  There are two major types:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea, in which the intake of air through the nose and mouth is obstructed during sleep.

Central Sleep Apnea, a disorder of the central nervous system in which the brain sends miscues to the body during sleep, causing the natural process of breathing to be disrupted or delayed.  Both types result in disturbed sleep and oxygen deficiency.

Management of Sleep Apnea:

  • Get plenty of rest. Maintain regular sleeping hours, and invest in a good clinically-proven medical-grade mattress from Natural Form Sleep System.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco, particularly before bedtime.  These substances have a sedative effect, relaxing throat muscles and encouraging loud snoring.
  • Maintain correct sleep posture. Sleeping flat on the back promotes snoring.  Side sleepers breath more easily and enjoy a comfortable rest.
  • Keep nasal passages open.  Nasal sprays and other remedies available over the counter can help.

Natural Form Sleep System can be a valuable ally in combating the disruptive effects of this common disorder.  Follow the simple tips described above, and you’ll soon be enjoying all the health benefits that a good night’s rest can provide.
