A healthy and comfortable sleep is very essential for every living being as it helps us to recharge our body and mind. However on many occasions over-sleeping can be unhealthy for us. The average sleep needed by a human being can vary according to gender, type of physical work, age and other factors. However, in general all human beings need to sleep at least seven to eight hours a day to stay fit and in good health.
Over-sleeping means sleeping more than your body needs you to. Oversleeping can make you lazy, low on energy, and inactive. It also interferes with our metabolism. Hence one of the most important sleep tips that I can give you is – Do not over sleep.
There are some speculations that some health problems can arise due to oversleeping over a long period of time. During a survey of almost 10,000 American individuals, scientists found a relationship between oversleeping and the risk of diabetes to our body. Individuals who slept more than nine and a half hours each night had a 45 percent increased risk of becoming a diabetic than those who slept seven hours each night.
Another possible effect of over sleeping is obesity. If an individual sleeps more than nine hours every day, the risk of obesity is increased by 25 percent in general. This happens over a period of time and results depend upon other factors as well. Some other possible side effects that are linked to oversleeping are – depression and low energy. Hence it is best if we do not sleep just enough.
A good 7 to 8 hour sleep should be sufficient to refresh and recharge most of us. Staying asleep too long can take a toll on our health and in a similar way, sleeping less than 6 hours a day may also cause health problems over a long period of time.
